Pneumapress® Installs Automatic Pressure Filter in European Biomass-to-Ethanol Research Facility

Pneumapress® Filter Corporation announces the installation and start-up of a new automatic pressure filter in the biomass-to-ethanol industry.

This unique filter was designed specifically for biomass filtration and was chosen over other equipment for its proven performance in the industry. The filter chamber is manufactured to withstand the strong acids and high temperatures of the application. A stainless steel housing, complete with safety doors, was also supplied to totally enclose the filtration process. This CE certified project was successfully completed this year at a research facility in Europe.

Pneumapress® has completed work on several biomass feedstocks, including corn stover, wood chips and municipal waste. Pneumapress® has been successfully involved in the development of the biomass-to-ethanol process in conjunction with several leading private and governmental research institutions in the US, Europe and Asia.

Pneumapress® filters are available in single-module or multi-module filter chamber construction with capacities from 1 to 10,000 GPM. Operation is both simple and fully automatic. The filtration cycle begins when the filter plates close to form the filter chambers. Each set of plates sandwiches a woven filter media belt, which separates the chamber into an upper and lower section. Slurry is pumped into the upper section of the filter chamber and a solid cake is formed above the filter media belt as the filtrate liquid passes through the belt. Once the cake is formed, wash liquid is pumped through the cake to remove any unwanted material from the cake. Compressed air or gas is then used to dry the cake by forcing the remaining liquid in the cake through the filter media. At the end of the filter cycle the filter chambers are opened and the filter media belts automatically discharge the dry cakes into a mixer, tote box, or onto a conveyor.
