Pneumapress® Installs Sanitary-Grade Automatic Pressure Filter in US Starch Industry
Pneumapress® Filter Corporation announces the installation and start-up of a new sanitary grade automatic pressure filter. This filtration system was designed specifically for the starch industry and was chosen over other filtration equipment for its performance and versatility. The project was successfully completed this year at a starch plant in the United States, where the filter is now running 24-hours a day, 7-days a week.
The filter chambers are manufactured from heavy-duty 316L stainless steel material, which is shaped and polished to ensure no product retention and ease of sanitization. All other wetted components are food-grade, with only 316 stainless steel or polymer exposed to the atmosphere. A fully automatic CIP system cleans and sanitizes the filter, both internally and externally, at regular intervals and prior to a product change. External surfaces are sloped to prevent product accumulation and increase the effectiveness of the CIP system, while greaseless bearings and a food-grade oil hydraulic system add to the overall cleanliness. A 316 stainless steel housing, complete with safety doors and catwalk, was also supplied to totally enclose the filtration process and protect it from the external environment.
Pneumapress® filters are available in single module or multi-module filter chamber construction with capacities from 1 to 10,000 GPM. Operation is both simple and fully automatic. The filtration cycle begins when the filter plates close to form the filter chambers. Each set of plates sandwiches a woven filter media belt, which separates the chamber into an upper and lower section. Slurry is pumped into the upper section of each filter chamber and a solid cake is formed above the filter media belt as the filtrate liquid passes through the belt. Once the cake is formed, wash liquid is pumped through the cake to remove any unwanted material from the cake. Compressed air or gas is then used to dry the cake by forcing the remaining liquid in the cake through the filter media. At the end of the filter cycle the filter chambers are opened and the filter media belts automatically discharge the dry cakes into a mixer, tote box, or onto a conveyor.
